DPNM could not be more proud of everything Democrats accomplished in the recent 2026 legislative session. The results Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, NM Senate Democrats, and NM House Democrats delivered exemplify the values the Democratic Party stands for.
While Trump and Washington Republicans make it harder for working families to afford groceries and gut education funding, NM Democrats codified the first-of-its-kind universal childcare system (HB 2 & SB 241) that will help alleviate financial stress and start young New Mexicans on an early path to success.
While Trump and Krisit Noem unleash untrained and militarized ICE operations to terrorize communities and violate constitutional rights in blue cities across the country, NM Democrats responded with the Immigrant Safety Act (HB 9), preventing NM from contracting with ICE to detain people for civil immigration violations and preventing ICE from deputizing local law enforcement to do their bidding, sending the message that New Mexico won’t be a party to Trump’s profit-driven mass deportation machine.
While Washington Republicans eliminate Affordable Care Act coverage for millions and gut Medicaid, NM Democrats continue working to make healthcare more affordable AND accessible with reform to New Mexico’s medical malpractice laws (HB 99), enrolling NM in interstate compacts which make it easier for qualified providers from other states to practice here (SB 1 & HB 50), and strengthening the NM Healthcare Affordability Fund to lower the cost of marketplace coverage.
While Donald Trump and Pam Bondi cover up, redact, and flat out hide troves Epstein files as the GOP collectively turns a blind eye to cover for the elite (especially Trump himself), NM Democrats created New Mexico’s own Epstein Truth Commission (HR 1) to investigate Epstein’s crimes and bring accountability to any of his associates who partook in illegal activity related to Zorro Ranch.
Just some of the other legislation DPNM wants to recognize which was considered this session includes:
-A state budget (HB 2) that keeps New Mexico in a very strong long-term financial position as the Republican federal government digs the country deeper into a state of economic uncertainty. This budget also builds the framework and staffing for universal childcare, promotes economic opportunity, increases access to healthcare, strengthens food assistance, expands housing, promotes public safety, and much more.
- A tax package (SB 151) that provides raises for state employees like teachers, firefighters, and social workers while also supporting affordable housing, healthcare providers, and economic development.
- Improving the judicial system’s ability to intervene and direct someone to treatment (SB 3) when that person is a threat to themselves or others while suffering from a severe mental illness or crisis.
- Preventing armed troops from intimidating voters at polling places (SB 264) or interfering with poll workers.
- The New Homes for New Mexico program (HB 200) to provide working-class first-time homebuyers with no-interest loans and incentivizes the construction of homes in areas of need.
- Creating the Office of New Americans (HB 124) within Workforce Solutions to help immigrants enter the workforce.
- Creating a Land Grant & Acequia Infrastructure trust fund (HB 371) for infrastructure in these historic New Mexican communities.
- House Joint Resolution 5, which will let voters decide in November if legislators should receive a salary.
DPNM applauds the work of the Governor, Democratic legislators, and the allied groups that made this session so remarkably productive. Universal childcare is just one example that demonstrates the years of hard work that go into our most transformative Democratic policies and underscores New Mexico’s potential to keep leading the way nationally in legislating for working families first.
Being a legislator is a year-round effort, and NM Senate Democrats and NM House Democrats will meet with constituents, travel the state, and participate in interim committee meetings now that the session is over. We look forward to the legislation that New Mexico Democrats have in store for the future of our state!
